Anant Chaturdashi is one Indian festival that beautifully weaves devotion, mythology, and emotional farewell of Ganpati Ji. In 2025, Anant Chaturdashi will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6.
For Hindus, the day is primarily dedicated to the divine Lord Vishnu, who is the preserver of the universe. The word “Anant” means infinite, something which has no end and on this day, devotees and worshippers, worship Lord Vishnu in his infinite or the Anant form. Devotees ask and request for protection from anything and everything evil. People seek blessings from the divine and liberation (mukti) from all hardships and unhappiness of life.
The festival falls on the 14th day which is also called Chaturdashi of the fortnight of Shukla Paksha which falls in the month of Bhadrapada, just a day before the full moon (Purnima).
This day has immense importance for Jains, this day marks the end of the 10-day Paryushan festival, one of the most significant time periods in the Jain calendar. On the auspicious day of Anant Chaturdashi, Jains observe Samvatsari, the day of forgiveness. They perform rituals of introspection, ask for forgiveness from others by saying “Micchami Dukkadam”, and aim to cleanse their karmic debts.
One of the most emotionally moving and visually pleasing aspect of Anant Chaturdashi is its connection and attachment with Ganesh Visarjan—where idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed (visarjit) in ponds, lakes, sea wherever possible. This marks the end of the 10 day long and beautiful Ganesh Chaturthi festival that year.Hindu Festivals + https://worldoffestivals.in/ganesh-chaturthi/ + Anant Chaturdashi 2025: Tomorrow Is The Auspicious Day! Even though it is celebrated all over India, but it has special importance and significance in Maharashtra where massive processions are taken out which fill the streets with music, dance, and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” (Come again soon next year, dear Lord!).
Families and communities, who had brought home idols of Lord Ganesha with love and devotion to their individual homes or in large pandals, then bid emotional goodbye and farewell with full hearts, as the idols are immersed in rivers, lakes, or the sea. It’s a joyous moment that blends happiness, gratitude, and a bit of sadness—symbolizing that nothing is permanent, be it life or happiness or sadness. the beautiful ceremony of visarjan teaches us the importance of letting go and having faith in the almighty that this happiness and good time will surely return.
On the daytime of Anant Chaturdashi, Hindu devotees observe a special Anant Puja in different parts of the country loke Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A sacred thread, called the “Anant Sutra”, is tied around the arms of those observing this festival. This thread is mostly made of 14 knots and colored in haldi (turmeric) and sindoor and roli (kumkum). Anant is worn by both men, women and children as a symbol of commitment and faith to the divine and to the faith in him.
This tradition runs back to the legend of a devoted woman named Sushila, who is said to have tied the Anant to the lord and in return as a blessing she got peace and prosperity in her life. The story can be read in the Bhavishya Purana, which highlights the power of faith, devotion, and vrata. Many even fast on this day and offer special home made sweets like Anarsa, Puran Poli, kheer and halwa, depending on the region where it is being celebrated.
