“Bohag” refers to the Assamese term for the months of April and May. Bihu is celebrated 3 times in a calendar year: Bohag or Rongali (for the spring season), Kongali (for the autumn season) and Bhogali (for the winter season).
Out of these 3, Bohag Bihu is the celebration of renewal, fertility, new crops and happiness as this is the time when the beauty of nature is at its peak, new crop harvesting begins and thus new start happens.
This festival is mostly about announcing and celebrating the agrarian lifestyle of Assam, in which farmers hope and wish for a great harvest ahead in the coming time.
Inception of Bohag Bihu goes back to the timeless agrarian customs. It dates back to the time when the Aryans and the Indo-Aryan culture had not even entered Assam. With time, Bohag Bihu incorporated many local traditions and many customs of local tribes and communities like Ahoms, who ruled Assam for centuries.
Bohag Bihu is majorly connected with customs of fertility and gratitude and thankfulness to nature. People prayed for great harvests, good health and wealth. Dhol beats(drum) and the melodies of the pepa which is a traditional horn are the main items used in celebrations which represent great chemistry between humans and nature.
