DOL JATRA 2026 - CELEBRATED ON PHALGUN PURNIMA IN EASTERN INDIA
Dol Jatra 2026 is a very happy, invigorating and spiritually elevating observances celebrated in the East of India mostly observed in the traditional Vaishnava areas. It falls on the Phalguna Purnima or the full moon day as per the lunar phase. Dol Jatra or Dol Purnima falls mostly on the day of Holi or Holika Dahan.
Dol Jatra 2026 will be celebrated on Tuesday, the 3rd of March 3. The main festival is observed on the day of Phalgun Purnima as per the Hindu Panchang’s Lunar positioning. Mostly Dol Jatra 2026 is played during the daytime when the full moon is prevailing.
The roots of Dol Jatra are integrated with the divinity of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. As per mythological saga, this day honors Shri Krishna’s whimsical “Dol Leela” which he plays with Radha and the Gopis. “Dol” means to swing, and thus on the occasion of Dol Jatra 2026, idols of Radha and Krishna are placed on embellished swings which the devotees push and rock and celebrate by singing and dancing around it.
The festival is specially auspicious for followers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the saint and founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Many consider him as an avatar of Lord Krishna. Dol Jatra is celebrated around his birth anniversary and is also called Gaura Purnima. He stressed on the importance of bhakti, Kirtan and Love for Shri Krishna which can be felt in Dol Jatra.

Dol Jatra is most prominently celebrated in West Bengal, Odisha and also in some parts of Assam and Manipur. The towns and villages and the whole state of West Bengal and Odisha are vibrant and soaring with devotional songs, colorful jhankis.
In Mayapur, the headquarters of ISKCON magnanimous celebrations happen and people from all across the world come here. In Vrindavan, the Bal Leela of Krishna’s childhood are recreated and people decorate swings as Radha Krishna used to sit and enjoy on them.
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temples worldwide celebrate Dol Jatra with devotional singing, dance, and color offerings. The festival is also observed in Puri with traditional rituals in Jagannath temple.
In West Bengal and Odisha, Dol Jatra is not only religious but also scholastic and artistic. Schools and cultural institutions organize Rabindra Sangeet performances and traditional dances. People dress in yellow or saffron attire, symbolizing spring and renewal. The atmosphere is joyful yet serene, balancing festivity with devotion.
