Guru Tegh Bahadur was the Ninth Sikh Guru and is held in high regards for his extensive knowledge of spirituality, mental strength, valour and the extreme sacrifice. On 1st of April in the year 1621, in Amritsar, the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Ji was born.
Since really early, Guru Tegh Bahadur was reflective, thoughtful and very brave. “Tegh Bahadur,” which translates to the “Brave Wielder of the Sword,” was the title given to him after showing inexplicable skills in battle. But despite of displaying this courage, the life of Guru Tegh Bahadur was about meditation, poetry and standing for fellow beings.
The key turn in Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life was when the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb came to an end. At that time, forced religious conversions were being imposed, particularly on Kashmiri Pandits.
It was then that Guru Tegh Bahadur chose to stand up for their right to practice their faith freely—even though it was not his own religion and stood up courageously for the oppressed. He even sacrificed his life for his values for fellow humans. Against the fight for religious freedom, he sacrificed his life but became immortal in his devotees’ lives.
In 1675, he was arrested and brought to Delhi. Despite severe torture and pressure, he refused to convert to Islam. He was publicly executed at Chandni Chowk, a site now marked by the historic Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib.
