Jitiya 2025: जीवित्पुत्रिका व्रत or जितिया व्रत 2025 on the 14th of September, 2025

Jitiya vrat also known as Jivitputrika vrat is a admired and a very respected fasting or vrat festival which is observed with much dedication and great devotion across several parts of India, especially in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and neighboring regions mostly in the eastern parts of India. This year in 2025, Jitiya will be observed on the 14th of september, 2025.

The preparations for the day are already being done by the ones who will be observing the fast. The day is observed along with all necessary and traditional rituals, by offering prayers to God and observing Nirjala fast. This day holds special significance for mothers as this day is dedicated to pray to the almighty for the long life and wellness and health for children.

The festival is primarily observed by mothers who undertake rigorous fasting and prayer for the safety and long life of their children. Known as Jivitputrika which comes every year on the day of Krishna Paksha Ashtami of the Ashwin month, which is mostly in the month of September. Even the word Jivitputrika has a special meaning, where “Jivit” means life and “putr” means child, and thus the day commences with mothers vowing for the long life of their children.

Rituals observed on Jitiya

The festival starts really early, that is one day before the actual fasting happens. Mothers who are affectionately called “Jitiya Ma,” abstain from any food and liquids including water on this day. Many others observe the fast by refraining from some specific kind of foods which is Anaaj (any kinds of grains) and namak(salt). Earlier the puja on this day was offered near the banks of river or ponds, but with changing times people now offer prayers either in temples or in mandirs (temple) of their homes.

The vrat (fasting) happens for either 24 hours or sometimes for even more than that. The complete refrain from food or water is a symbol of the dedication of all mothers. Mothers pray with full dedication to Lord Jimutvahana, the Gandharva king and request him to always safeguard their children from any kind of harm. They pray for prosperity of their children. Women wear a locket/pendant during the puja which is called Jitiya in many areas.

The observance of this fast becomes even more difficult with the weather remaining humid at that time, which make one feel doubly thirst. But nothing can break a mother’s spirit and they still observe this day with a smile on their face and peace and love in their hearts.

Mythological Significance

There are several stories behind why the day jiviputrika is observed. One of them is that a king named Jimutvahan had saved a snake from being sacrificed as the mother of the snake had prayed and requested him to save her child from a garud. King Jimutvahan vowed to save the snake baby and abided by his promise. जीवित्पुत्रिका व्रत कथा (Jivitputrika Vrat Katha) Hindi PDF – InstaPDF.
