Mahavir Jayanti 2026 is one of the most holy festival in the Jain religion and it is observed to honor Bhagwan Mahavir by celebrating his birth anniversary. Bhagwan Mahavira was the last and the 24th Tirthankara who had a major role in setting the foundation of Jainism and giving it such a beautiful shape. On the day of Mahavir Jayanti 2026, which is the 2462nd birth anniversary, the devotees will pray, do sankalp of Ahimsa and introspect on the teachings of Jainism.

The festival is observed on the 13th day or Trayodashi of the Chaitra month as per the Hindu Panchang and is observed by Jain and Hindu devotees all over the globe. On this day believers pray, fast and participate in works of empathy and compassion.
In 599 BCE in Kundagrama which is the present-day Bihar, Bhagwan Mahavir was born to Raja Siddhartha and Rani Trishala. It is a popular belief that when his mother was pregnant with him, she used to have beautiful, holy, sacred dreams which is why his birth has been mentioned in Jain scriptures as a very divine incident.
When Mahavira turned 30, he abdicated his life as a King in search of spirituality. He did powerful meditation, Tapasya and atonement and after many years he was able to achieve Kevala Jnana or omniscience and eventually he spent the rest of his life teaching the value and road of virtue, constraint, Moksha and liberation.
