The buffalo demon King Mahishasura had been blessed by Lord Brahma that no man or god could kill him, after which he defeated the gods and spread his supremacy on heaven. After facing defeat, the gods went to the Trinity which is Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva for help. From the collective energy of the divine Trinity a supreme power was given birth which was named Adi Shakti-Maa Durga who rode on a lion.
Every God had a contribution in her form and weapons. Maa Durga then took on Mahishasura and they had a ferocious battle that went on for nine nights and ten days. The tenth day which is known as Vijayadashami (Dussehra), she killed (vadh) Mahishasura with her trishool (trident) while he had turned himself into a buffalo.
