A well known story from the Mahabharata comes in the forefront here, Daanveer Karna, despite his generous nature during his lifetime on the earth was not given food to eat in his afterlife, instead he was given gold and gold ornaments. Lord Indradev  then informed him that was because during his life he never offered food to his ancestors. He was then granted 15 days to amend his doings, during which he came back to earth so that he could offer daan and tarpan to his ancestors through Shraddha offerings of food and water. And this is supposed to be the story behind Pitra Paksha
