Why is Puthandu Celebrated?

Puthandu being the New Year and also Thai New Year is the representation on newness, wealth, fortune, glory and hope. As per Tamil Culture and traditions, it is a wide renowned belief that it was on this day that Brahma Ji who is the creator of the Universe amongst the Trinity of Gods started the process of creation of the Universe. Which is why this day illustrates celestial harmony, balance and new start.

Speaking of planetary positions, it is on this day that Sun aligns with Aries or Mesha and thus starts the new solar cycle which astronomically is very significant for spiritual discipline and resolutions.

Another story associated dates back to the Sangam period when in order to welcome the harvest season, this festival was observed. Just like other regional New Year festivals in India such as Vishu in Kerala, Rongali Bihu in Assam and Baisakhi in Punjab, Puthandu also applauds the cycle of nature, harvest, agrarian life and life.

How is Puthandu Celebrated?

“Kanni”, which means “auspicious sight.” is the custom that starts very early in the morning. Families arrange a tray with items like fruits, flowers, gold jewelry, betel leaves and a mirror. If one sees this tray first thing in the morning is believed it brings fortune and prosperity.

After deep cleaning, houses decorated with kolam or Rangoli and everyone adorns new attire. Devotees go to temples to offer Special prayers to Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi for happiness and prosperity and wealth.

Devotees read Panchangam or the Tamil almanac which predicts the upcoming year by defining position of planet etc.

Just like Vishu, in Pothanu 2026 also elders give gifts or money to young ones. This is called Kai Vishesham in order to wish and bless them with happiness and wealth.

Traditional Dishes of Puthandu

Food and dishes prepared for Puthandu 2026 are a reflection of life’s aspects like sweet, spice, sour,etc. Mangai Pachadi, the dish made with raw mango, jaggery, neem flowers, tamarind and spices. Each ingredient shows a unique life emotions like joy, sorrow, anger. The dishes are traditionally served on banana leaves.
