In the name Rohini Vrat, as per the namesake, “Rohini” is connected with lunar or has nightly connections, and vrat means a fast that is not eating grains for the day or abiding by a religious vow. People observe Rohini Vrat on the day when the moon transports through the Rohini Nakshatra.
For Jains, Rohini Vrat is a really holy day as it is connected with observing fast, meditation, introspection and indulging into selfless charity. Vrat or fast is observed on this day as it is believed that observing this vrat will remove all negative energy that has been collected and only peace and positivity will prevail For those who do this vrat, do prayers and read their scriptures. Rohini Vrat as per mythology, is connected to Lord Krishna and is observed when the Rohini Nakshatra becomes stronger after sunrise which is the nighttime. On this Jain women observe full day fast in order to pray to their Lord asking him longevity and prosperity of their husbands. Women pray to the Lord for happy and peaceful marriage. This vrat in accordance with all customs and traditions is to be observed for three, five, or seven years.
Anyone who is keeping the fast or vrat should not see this as a punishment but consider this as a monthly spiritual retreat. This vrat brings peace and positivity and eliminates negative karma. The practice of observing this vrat is in lines with the spiritual Jain belief that harming oneself or others through attachment and indulgence creates negative karmic energy.
Those Jains who keep fast on the day of Rohini Vrat should wake up early and offer their morning prayers and read scriptures. Temple visit is also appreciated. Meditating and observing self discipline and introspection is what is most needed on this day. Rituals also include keeping the idol of the Lord Vasupujya and praying to him. Preachings on practicing non violence and self righteousness in gatherings is also a practice in Jainism.
There are no hard and fast rules on how the fast should be kept. People can keep fast as to what suits their physical and mental capacity. Some observe very strict fats or vrat without any food or watewr and some take fruits throughout the day and abstain from consuming grains and salt.
When breaking the vrat or fast, the devotees ask for forgiveness for any harm caused to any loving organism even if it unintentional.
Rohini Vrat which is observed once every month throughout the year has deeper rooted meanings. Though this fast is observed by women for the health, wealth, longevity and prosperity of husbands in addition of a peaceful marriage, this fast is also a roadway to spiritual attainment of peace.
The vrat reminds everyone of the deep rooted Jain values of non-violence, self-control, and purity of thought. It treats everyone equally and gives everyone a chance to cleanse their energes and karmas.
