Mahalaya Amavasya which is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Pitru Paksha Mahalaya the day which marks the end of the Pitru Paksh or Shradh/Shraddh period and the people begin to rejoice for the arrival of the almighty Maa Durga or Goddess Durga. Mahalaya Amavasya is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya, Ashwim Amavasya or Pitru Paksha Mahalaya, is the last day or the final day of Pitru Paksha is the chapter dedicated to fulfilling and completing the Shradh/Shradhh rituals performed for our loved ones or our ancestors. It is a common belief that it is on this day that our ancestors who have left the earth do come back to accept the offerings, tarpan, prasad etc. that have been offered to them during Pitru Paksh. Customs followed and rituals performed
Anyone who is performing the rituals on Mahalaya Amavasya has to wake up early in the morning followed by taking a dip in the holy river Ganga or any waterbody nearby. Mostly people try to perform the rituals in the River Ganga in Gaya, Bihar. After that, Tarpan is performed wherein watter is offered to the ancestors. Pind Daan is done where rice balls in addition to tarpan is offered to the ancestors. Pushp (flowers), dhoop and agarbatti (incense sticks) are also used in performing the Shradh/Shradhh rituals. These customs help us in getting ashirwad and blessings from our ancestors.
After performs these Shradh/Shradhh rituals food and clothes are offered to the Brahmins and the needy and poor. It is believed that this act of offering food and clothes brings peace to our ancestors and they may attain moksha. Indiatimes
Astrological Significance of Mahalaya Amavasya
Amavasya in general is considered a day of new beginnings astrologically. The new moon which comes from the new lunar phase is considered great for spiritual introspection. One who performs the rituals on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya paves the path for bringing harmony and prosperity to the family. It is said that for any reason whatsoever, if you have missed to offer tarpan and pind to the ancestors on the allocated day, then you can perform it on Mahalaya Amavasya and it will bear the same fruits.
However, this day is not considered great for auspicious activities like weddings, grahpravesh/grihpravesh or housewarming function etc.
