The most auspicious time for पूजा (puja) and स्नान (holy bath) is during the early morning hours which is at Brahma Muhurat around sunrise. This is observed in the sacred Vaishakh month a few days after Akshay Tritiya.
As per our Hindu tales and sagas, Ganga Saptami is observed on the day when Maa Ganga came back to Earth. She was released from the ashram of Rishi Jahnu. Thus, this day is also known as “Jahnu Saptami.”
When Raja Bhagiratha did extreme Tap or penance so that the sacred Ganga Nadi came to the earth, so that he could perform Pitru Daan in order to attain salvation or Moksha of his ancestors. As a result of this Tapasya Goddess Ganga came to the Earth with extreme force. In order to control her powerful flow, Bhagwan Shiv held her in his Jata and softly released Ganga to the Earth.
While she was descending, Ganga flooded Rishi Jahnu’s ashram, which angered him extremely. As a result. Rishi drank the river and when Gods requested him a lot, he released Ganga through his ear, which is why she got the name “Jahnavi” or “Jahnvi”.
Ganga Saptami is a very spiritually loaded observance and anyone who prays to Maa Ganga on this day is cleared of his previous karmic sins which brings happiness, peace, prosperity and Moksha or ultimate liberation.
