International Labour Day 2026 which is also popular as May Day is observed on 1st May each year to commemorate the contributions, struggles, hard work and achievements of workers all across the globe. Labour Day goes back to the late 19th century when industrialization was rapidly happening and workers were facing really tough conditions like long hours, late hours and almost no rights. Then came a major time with the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, USA.
In May 1886, workers organized a nationwide strike in which they were demanding an eight-hour workday. A peaceful rally was organized at Haymarket Square where a bomb was thrown which led to violence and many even died due to the blast. This tragic yet hard-hitting incident was the strongest turning point in the global labor movement.
In 1889, the International Labour Organization and socialist groups thereby announced May 1 as International Workers’ Day as a tribute to this struggle and the hardships. With time, this day became a worldwide observance to recognise the rights and dignity of workers.
