The appearance of Bhagwan Narasimha is said to have occurred during sandhya kaal (twilight period), which makes this evening worship very sacred. It is advised to complete the fast with sattvic food and prayers after offering bhog to the deity.
It is observed on Chaturdashi or fourteenth day of the holy Vaishakh month. Narasimha Jayanti is observed with great devotion by Vaishnavas, the disciples of Vishnu Ji in the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu,
The story of Narasimha Jayanti goes back to the saga of faith and divine justice. The demon king Hiranyakashipu had got immense power and strength via a boon that made him nearly invincible or Amar. He declared himself God and demanded everyone worship him and not any other deity.
However, his own son, Prahlada, was a heartfelt devotee of Bhagwan Vishnu. He got super angry because of this and thereby Hiranyakashipu subjected Prahlada to severe punishments, but divine protection always saved him.
Finally, to end the tyranny, Bhagwan Vishnu took the roop of Narasimha who was neither man nor beast, at twilight, on a threshold and killed Hiranyakashipu using his claws, thus cleverly overcoming the conditions of the boon.
This story symbolizes that faith always triumphs over arrogance and evil.
