Thrissur Pooram 2026: Historical Background

The origins of Thrissur Pooram go back to the late 18th century and are credited to Sakthan Thampuran who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin.

As per the saga, due to heavy rains, temples from Thrissur were delayed in attending the Arattupuzha Pooram and were denied participation. Sakthan Thampuran was very insulted by this and he decided to create a grand festival of his own. He unified ten temples and organized a spectacular and magnanimous celebration at Vadakkunnathan Temple from where started the festival of Thrissur Pooram.

Since then, the festival has grown to become one of Asia’s largest cultural gatherings which attracts numerous visitors every year.

Significance of the Festival Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is a symbol of unity, devotion, religiousness and cultural spirit. It is devoted to Lord Shiva who is the main God or deity of Vadakkunnathan Temple.
