JYESHTHA AMAVASYA 2026 ON 16TH MAY 2026 IS THE TIME FOR INTROSPECTION, PITRU TARPAN, DAN AND DHYAAN
Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026 is the most significant and strong New Moon Day or Amavasya as per the Hindu Panchang. Jyeshtha month is the summer season in India and this Amavasya observed during this month is deeply associated with ancestor worship, purification rituals, charity and spiritual cleansing. It is said that when one does Puja on this day, Karmic Dosh, Pitru Dosh are cleared which invites peace to the ancestors for success and peace.

The best time for rituals, tarpan and daan is morning of Amavasya. In many parts of India, Jyeshtha Amavasya is also linked with sacred bathing rituals, Peepal Puja, Shani Dosh removal and Pitru Tarpan. The energy of Amavasya is considered highly potent for meditation, self-reflection and karmic healing.
Amavasya, or the New Moon or the no-moon day is devoted to Pitru or ancestors, spiritual purification and introspection. Jyeshtha Amavasya is all the more important as it happens on a spiritually loaded phase when the intensity and energy of Surya is at its highest.
On this day the curtain between the physical and ancestral worlds becomes less visible. This is why rituals for departed ancestors, known as Pitru rituals are very significant.
This day is also observed as Darsha Amavasya, Shani Jayanti, Masik Karthigai and Vat Savitri Vrat. Thus, Shani Dev, Mahadev, Kartikeya Bhagwan and Peepal and Vat Vrisha are also worshipped. Heartfelt Puja and Daan done on this Amavasya lessens karmic burdens, negativity and barriers in path of loved ones’ success.
Pitru Tarpan is one of the most important customs done on Jyeshtha Amavasya. “Tarpan” means offering water with Kala Til or black sesame seeds, barley, doob to ancestors with devotion and thankfulness.
Hindus believe that performing tarpan:
Devotees usually perform tarpan near holy rivers, ponds or at home while facing south after taking a bath
People whose family members passed away recently especially observe this day with faith and memories. Feeding cows, crows, dogs, poor and needy is also advised.
The day starts at Brahm Muhurat by taking a holy bath preferably in Ganga Ji or by mixing Gangajal in bathing water at home.

Do’s:
1. Perform Pitru Tarpan: Offering tarpan wholeheartedly is most important
2. Daan: Charity performed on Amavasya is said to bring multiple fold results so donate water, clothes, grains, fans, umbrellas, ghada, or cooling items due to the summer season.
3. Peepal Puja: Doing Parikrama of Peepal tree and lighting a diya is significant.
4. Chant Shiv mantras, Shani mantras or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for positivity.
5. Mental Peace: Ideal for meditation, silence and introspection.
Don’ts of Jyeshtha Amavasya 2026
1. Avoid Negative Thoughts and Conflicts, anger and harsh words which may be hurtful to anyone.
2. Do Not Consume Tamasic Food like alcohol, onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food.
3. Avoid Cutting Trees or Hurting Animals or any acts of violence as they are said to be unholy.
4. Do Not Disrespect Ancestors or Elders and show gratitude for their experience and wisdom.
5. Avoid Beginning Major Auspicious Events like Shaadi or weddings, Grih Pravesh or housewarming, Mundan, Engagement, buying new properties, starting new job ceremonies.
