Karadaiyan Nombu 2026 is a very auspicious Hindu observance celebrated by women or girls in the Southern part of India mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu and in parts of Kerala as well. The revered day is a commemoration of the love between the divinity that is Mahadev and Maa Parvati. Nombu Muhurat is the Shubh Muhurat when the devotees or the women observing the Vrat tie the pious dhaga or thread and do the puja during the time when the transition from Maasi to Panguni specifically happens as this is the most spirited time.

Karadaiyan Nombu 2026: History and Mythological Story

This observance is motivated by the saga of Savitri and Satyavan. As per Mahabharata, the famous Hindu epic, Savitri was a very faithful loving wife to her husband Satyavan, but it was known information that Satyavan will die in the first year of his marriage.

On the day of his death, Savitri was not ready to leave Satyavan alone and went behind him to the forest. When Yamraj the God of death was taking away Saytyavan ki Aatma or soul with him Savitri followed him there also and was adamant that she will not leave him at any cost. Yama after seeing her perseverance and blessed her to ask for boon or Vardan.

She asked that she and Satyavan be blessed with 100 sons, and for this to happen, Satyavan was eventually returned back to life by Yam.

From then on, married women started to do the Karadaiyan Nombu observance and wish for longevity of their husbands and for their good health.

Significance of Karadaiyan Nombu

1. Longevity of husband’s life : Married females women Pray and do Vrat or fast for their life partner’s health, wealth, peace, prosperity and long lives.

2. Represents happy faithful marriages: Symbolizes good marital life and bliss

3. Nomba Charadu: Followers tie a sacred yellow thread like a necklace which is a safeguard of their husband’s lives.

4. Unmarried Girls also pray: For righteous and loving Mahadev like husbands.

Karadaiyan Nombu 2026 will be mainly observed by:

  • Married Hindu women (they wear beautiful traditional sarees for Puja) – For their husband’s long lives
  • Unmarried girls – For virtuous and faithful husbands to be.

Karadaiyan Nombu 2026 : Puja Vidhi

1. Morning rituals : Followers get up at Brahm Muhurat and after taking bath, decorate houses with Kolam which is a Rangoli at the household entrance.

2. Karadai

Karadai which is the special prasadam or offering where rice flour and black eyed beans or lobia is used is made. It is believed that after Yamraj gave back Satyavan’s life back, Savitri cooked this meal to thank Yam and served it with butter:

  • Sweet Karadai with jaggery– made with jaggery
  • Salt Karadai with spices and lentils or dal.

3. Puja Place Decoration

Goddess Parvati idol or picture is placed is placed and Betel leaves, Fruits, Flowers, Butter and Karadai is offered

4. Fasting

Till the exact Maasi–Panguni progression happens.

5. Tying the Nombu Charadu

Tying the sacred yellow thread or Nombu Charadu embellished with turmeric around their neck is compulsory. All this while, this prayer should be recited for happy married lives:

“Urugaadha Vennaiyum, Oru Adaiyum Naan Vaithen;
Orukkalum En Kanavan Ennai Piriyamal Irukka Vendum.”

6. Offering Prasad

Karadai is prepared and offered to the Goddess Gowri and then with everyone.
