Shaheed Diwas 2026 - 23 march, the day of Execution of the Revolutionary Trio
Shaheed Diwas 2026 the spinechilling day will be observed on Monday, 23rd March, 2026. It is a day dedicated to commemorating the supreme sacrifice of three of India’s fearless and valiant freedom fighters — Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar. On 23rd March,1931 these young revolutionaries were martyred and executed by the British government.
The story begins at a time when the British Colonial Government was ruling India in the early 20th century. It was a time of relentless struggle to protest and get freedom from the British Rule. Those were really tough times.
At that time, on one hand there were leaders like Mahatma Gandhi who were advocating and practising non-violence while on the other side there were really young, dauntless, fearless freedom fighters who firmly believed that to attain freedom from this colonialism strong, armed fight was necessary to get back what is ours.
Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were the prominent figures of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), which was committee or organization of fearless, heroic nationalist who advocated action rather than ahimsa.
It is to be pointed here that the emotion behind their thought process was not hatred but it was their want for independence, for nation’s freedom for justice and for unity and equality.
The turning point came in 1928, when Punjab Kesari, Lala Lajpat Rai died due to sustaining life threatening injuries during a police baton while he was leading a peaceful protest in Lahore against Simon Commission.
This sacrifice of Lala Lajpat Rai infuriated Bhagat Singh to the core and thereby he and his fellow HSRA members made a plan to take revenge of his death.
A plan to take revenge was made of which Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were majorly involved. As a part of this revenge, they were to shoot James Scott but in a case of mistaken identity, Rajguru shot British officer J.P. Saunders thinking that he was the officer who was responsible for the lathi charge that killed Lala Lajpat Rai.
Afterwards Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw non-lethal bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in 1929 for which they had pre-planned to get arrested as they had planned to use the courtroom trail as a channel to extend and broadcast their ideologies for fight for freedom.
Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh was born in 1907 in Punjab into a family of freedom fighters. Bhagat Singh was influenced from his early years by the freedom revolution and its movements that were going on in the Nation.
To strengthen his ideologies Bhagat Singh started reading and reading more and strengthened his ideologies. He was a stern believer in socialism, secularism and most importantly in the fact that every change can be brought by the youth.
Rajguru
Born as Shivaram Hari Rajguru in 1908 in Bheem near Pune, Rajguru has an avid shooter and committed towards the country. He became a part of India’s Freedom revolution at a very young age and was the one who shot J.P.Saunders in the Saunders assassination.
Sukhdev Thapar
Sukhdev Thapar was born in 1907 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He was a very wise man and had great anticipation and logical skills and was the brain behind HSRA. He initiated revolutionary movements in Punjab and north India and urged and convinced many youngsters to join HSRA and the freedom fight.
The British government conducted a controversial trial which was very criticized for it being an unfair trial. There were many protests held for leniency throughout the Nation, but the British Colonial Government did not pay any heed.
On March 23, 1931, the three revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were executed in Lahore Jail. Many newspapers say that the trio walked to the wooden structure used for hanging people as a form of execution with fearlessness and pride and constantly shouting slogans like “Inquilab Zindabad” .
Their execution sparked outrage across the country and turned them into immortal symbols of resistance and unwavering love to the Nation. IT was on this day, that history was created.
The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi is commemorated as Martyr’s Day and many may get it confused with Shaheed Diwas 2026. The ultimate sacrifice that the trio underwent with no fear inspired the young people of that time and it gave way to the fight for liberty and justice.
As India sets to become the Supreme Power of the world, the love for Nation which the trio showed at that young age should shine upon the country and be remembered on 23rd March as Shaheed Diwas, 2026. The day reminds us that freedom was not given, but earned through immense sacrifice and should be cherised and respected.
Shaheed Diwas 2026 is a day to remember the heroes that stood like rock, with courage, mental strength and stood for liberty, justice and Independence.
Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar are the pillars on which Independent India today shines.
