Vat Savitri Vrat 2026 is a very pious Hindu festival which is observed by married Hindu women for longevity of life, success, prosperity and well-being of their husbands. The vrat is devoted to the faith of Savitri, who is said to have brought back her husband Satyavan back from Yamraj, the God of Death. The festival is majorly done in North India, Maharashtra, Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

In several regions like Maharashtra and Gujarat, women observe the vrat on Vat Purnima, which may fall on a different date due to regional traditions. Women generally perform the पूजा during the morning hours after taking a bath and completing the vrat sankalp.
“Vat” in Hindi means the Banyan tree, which is a symbol of longevity, stability, faithfulness and immortality in Hinduism. The vrat is based on the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri was a devoted princess who married Satyavan despite learning knowing that he will die within a year. On the doom day, Satyavan collapsed while cutting wood in the forest. Yamraj, the God of death came to take his soul, but Savitri followed him and refused to leave without her husband.
He was very happy with her faith, intelligence and dedication, Yamraj granted her several boons. Eventually, Savitri requested the life of her husband, and Yamraj restored Satyavan to life. This story made Savitri a symbol of ideal devotion, courage and marital faith. Even today, women observe the vrat to seek blessings for a strong and prosperous married life.
