2026 Ganga Dussehra is one of the most pious observances in Hinduism which celebrates the day when Ganga Ji descended to Prithvi from Swarg. This divine day is a major observance which takes place with much fervour and faith throughout the whole of India, but majorly in sacred cities like Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Patna, Varanasi and Prayagraj. 2026 Ganga Dussehra is observed on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Jyeshtha month.

As this festival is deeply connected with sacred bathing rituals, devotees wake up at Brahm Muhurat and take a holy dip in the Ganga Ji or nearby rivers or lakes.
As per Hindu Sagas, Raja Bhagirath did Ghor Tapasya so that Maa Ganga comes to Earth so that the souls of his ancestors can get Moksha. Pleased with his Bhakti, Ganga Ji came from heaven, while Bhagwan Shiv made sure that the flow strength is controlled by capturing Ganga Ji in his Jata or long hair so that no destruction is caused on Prithvi.
This sacred day is called Ganga Dussehra. The word “Dussehra” here signifies the destruction of ten sins:
