Lord Skanda or Bhagwan Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is worshipped as the commander of the God’s army. He represents courage, discipline, victory, intelligence, wisdom and divine youthfulness. In South India, he is lovingly worshipped as Lord Murugan, the destroyer of evil forces and protector of devotees.
He carriers a divine weapon, the Vel (spear), which represents the destruction of ignorance and negative forces.
The roots of Skanda Sashthi goes back to the legendary battle between Lord Skanda and the demon Soorapadman (Surapadman). As per the Hindu Sagas, the demon had become extremely powerful and had started terrorizing the three worlds. The Devas prayed to Bhagwan Shiv for protecting them.
From Shiv Ji’s divine energy emerged Lord Skanda,in order to defeat the demon forces. After an extremely fierce battle which lasted for six days, Lord Murugan finally ended Soorapadman on the Shashthi Tithi. This victory is a symbol of the triumph of good and virtue over evil.
