Kartik Purnima, the greatest and the most pious Purnima or the night of the full moon that is observed. Kartik Punima is one of the most sacred observances in the Hindu calendar. This Purnima is celebrated with deep faith, dedication and fervour across the whole Indian sub-Continent.

Purnima means the night of the full moon and Kartik Purnima is the last day of the Kartik month as per the Hindu Calendar. Kartik is considered a very holy month in Hinduism and many festivals, fasts and sacred observances are observed during this month. Kartik month is generally the month of October or November.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is the day for honoring and paying tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his birth anniversary, the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikhism. On the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Gurudwaras are decorated and lit up, bhajan and kirtan samaroh (events) are held and charity is done.

For Jains, Kartik Purnima is the day when Gautam Swami, attained Keval Gyan (supreme knowledge). Gautam Swami was the chief disciple of Lord Mahavira. This attainment of Keval Gyan marks this day as the day of spiritual and moral awakening.

Shubh Muhurat and timings of Kartik Purnima

Kartika Purnima will be observed on Wednesday, the 5th of November, 2025. As per Drig Panchang following is the Shubh Muhurat on Kartik Purnima:

 Moonrise or Chandrodaya time on Purnima – 5.12 pm on 5th November, 2025

Purnima Tithi will begin at 10.36 pm on 04th November, 2025.

Purnima Tithi will end at 06.48 pm on 05th November, 2025.

Rituals and Traditions followed on Kartik Purnima

Those who follow and believe this day, for them the rituals begin really early in the morning. Many go to take a holy dip mostly in Ganga Ji (Holy River Ganges). Many also take a dip in Yamana, Narmada or Godavari. The custom of taking a holy bath or holy dip is called Kartik Snan.

It is that that Kartik Snan purifies your mind and soul and cleanses your past bure karm or sins. Infact the whole Hindu month of Kartik is considered very holy, and taking bath in these holy rivers is considered to be very auspicious and cleanse your mind and soul. It is believed that those who take holy bath on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, receive special blessings from Lord Vishnu.

Deep Daan is another ritual which is followed on this day. Deep Daan means to offer small earthen lamps. These diyas are lighted and then offered to Tulsi or the holy basil in temples or in nearby water bodies. This ritual is practiced at dawn. These twinkling diyas are a representation of victory of light over darkness. Just the sight of these many twinkling shimmering diyas on the river is so soothing to the soul.

People observe day long fasts on the occasion of Kartik Purnima in order to pay reverence to Bhagwan Vishnu and Bhagwan Shiv. It is advised to read and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and Shiva Chalisa in unison with showering the deities with flowers, home made sweets and agarbatti (incense sticks).

Tulsi Vivah is one of the most important customs which is held on this day. Tulsi Vivah is a ceremony where Tulsi Ji (Holy Basil) is married off to Shaligram Stone, the avatar of Lord Vishnu. This Mela or Fair is a very colourful, lively and vibrant place to be.

Karthigai Deepam is observed in the southern states of India mostly in Tamil Nadu. Arunachala Hill Top in Tiruvannamalai is lit with a grand light on this day. The light on top of the Hill is considered to be Bhagwan Shiva eternal avatar of radiance. All temples and houses are also lit with lamps and lights and this view simply exudes devotion and radiance of the faith.
