Mauni Amavasya is well known to everyone, be it Hindu or from any other religion. Falling in the Magh month, it is one of the most pious days as per Hindu Panchang and Calendar and the most sacred ritual of the day is Mauni Amavasya Snan.

Mauni Amavasya Snan is the holy bath which is done on the occasion of the Amavasya which is the New Moon Day as per the Hindu Lunar Calendar. Mauni Amavasya is a very spiritual and enlightening for the believeers not only across Indian Sub Continent but across the globe. The ritual is said to cleanse the body, mind and soul if followed with ultimate faith and devotion.

Importance of Mauni Amavasya Snan

The term Mauni in itself speaks a lot about the importance of this day. Derived from the Sanskrit word Maun which translates to silence, this day and the ritual is about practicing the art of silence to attain restraint and command over words, anxiety, fear and emotions. Mauni Amavasya Snan purifies all bure karm or past sins and take you towards salvation or the ultimate truth.

It is said that taking a holy bath on Mauni Amavasya in holy rivers namely Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Godavari, Narmada or Kaveri blesses one with Punya equivalent to a 1000 havans and restraints. Mauni Amavasya is Snan is the piousest day amongst all the Magh Snan days. It is even more significant during the Kumbh Mela and also during Magh Mela.

Mauni Amavasya Snan 2026 Date, Time and Shubh Mahurat

Most Hindus believe in observing any festival or occasion as per Udya Tithi, and thus Mauni Amavasya Snan will be observed on Sunday, the 18th of January, 2026.

Holy Bath or Snan for the best result and super Ashirwaad should be done in the Brahma Muhurat. Brahma Muhurat is the time before sunrise around 3-4 in the morning approximately 1-2 hours prior to the rising of the sun.

Amavasya tithi begins on 12.03 am on 18th January 2026 and continues till 1.21 am on the 19th of January, 2026.

Since the Magh Mela sees the largest number of Devotees on Mauni Amavasya, all are suggested to be there a night before in order to complete their Mauni Amavasya Snan during Brahm Muhurat i.e. before sunrise. However, if one cannot visit a sacred river, bathing at home with water with a few drops of Gangajal in it while praying with full faith will be the most result giving.

Rituals Observed on Mauni Amavasya 2026

Devotees observe various rituals to seek blessings and inner peace:

  1. Verbal Silence (Maun Vrata): Many people remain silent for the entire day or for a specific period.
  2. Fasting (Vrat): Observing a full or partial fast helps in soul Amavasya
  3. Bhagwan Vishnu and Lord Shiva Worship: Make sure to worship Mahadev and Lord Vishnu on the occassion of Mauni Amavasya and while performing Mauni Amavasya Snan.
  4. Charity (Daan): Donating food, clothes, grains, and money to the needy is highly auspicious.
  5. Pitru Tarpan: Holy bath in unison with Pani arpan to ancestors brings them peace and reklieves you from Pitr Dosh
  6. Meditation or dhyaan: Chanting mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” or Gayatri Mantra take you on to a cosmic tour
